Step 1: locate the birthday
A calendar date is assigned a position within the average solar year. Zephyr uses a 365.2422-day year so the cycle reflects the annual rhythm more accurately than pretending every year is exactly 365 days.
The position can be expressed as a fraction, a degree on the wheel, or a day number. January and December meet at the seam, so the distance between December 31 and January 1 is tiny—not a dramatic 364-day breakup.

In equal-tempered Western music, an octave contains 1,200 cents. A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Zephyr maps the full annual cycle to those 1,200 cents.
pitch position = solar position × 1,200 centsA birthday halfway around the year sits near 600 cents from the root—a tritone. About seven-twelfths of the year maps near 700 cents—a perfect fifth. The continuous Solar mode preserves the exact position; the 12-tone mode snaps it to the nearest familiar pitch class.
Step 3: choose a root
Music is relational. A note is not “a fifth” by itself; it is a fifth relative to another note. Zephyr lets one person become the root. Everyone else is measured from that solar position.
Changing the root does not change anyone’s birthday. It changes the perspective. The same group can be heard from Mom’s center, your best friend’s center, or the person who insists the vacation spreadsheet needs seventeen tabs.
Step 4: name the interval
Zephyr compares the calculated pitch distance with familiar musical intervals. A near match receives the conventional name plus the remaining difference in cents.
Same pitch position. Alignment, reinforcement, and possible matching outfits.
Colorful consonance. Often warmer and more emotionally expressive.
Open, stable resonance. The structural beams of a lot of music.
Maximum symmetry and unresolved tension. Not evil—just allergic to sitting quietly.
Step 5: add more people
Two birthdays create an interval. Three or more create a chord-like collection. Zephyr plays each pitch with a slight stagger and sustained bell tone so the ear can catch both the individuals and the combined shape.
The group does not need to form a textbook major or minor chord to be interesting. Real families rarely do. Some clusters sound luminous, some suspended, some crunchy, and some sound like Thanksgiving seating arrangements.
Does this prove compatibility?
No. The conversion from date to pitch is mathematically consistent, and the musical intervals are real. The claim that those intervals predict human compatibility remains a working theory and creative experiment.
Zephyr therefore describes interval character rather than issuing compatibility verdicts. “Transformative tension” says more than “bad match.” In music, tension creates motion. In relationships, it can create attraction, growth, conflict, or a group chat muted until Monday.
